5 must-visit hippy markets on Ibiza

Shopping, island style, at Ibiza's amazing markets.

So, you have already taken a dip in the warm Balearic Sea, marvelled at sunsets, partied all night and visited Formentera. It is now time to indulge yourself in one of Ibiza's best attractions: its various Hippy Markets. Rooted in the hippy movement that fled to Ibiza during the '60s, they are scattered all over the island and cater for every taste.

Hippy Market Punta Arabí

Opened in 1973, the Hippy Market Punta Arabí in the popular resort of Es Caná (Es Canar in Catalan) is the oldest and biggest hippy market in Ibiza.

Over 400 artisans and vendors offer high-quality crafts, colourful clothing from southeast Asia and self-designed fashion, accessories of all kinds, wooden toys, jewellery from India and much, much more. Visitors are entertained by music and diverse live performances.

A choice of food trucks and several restaurants and bars make sure you don't go hungry. Get there early or later in the day to avoid the crowds. Bring your kids along as there is a specially designed area for them.

When: every Wednesday from May to October, 10:00 to 19:00 (18:00 in May)

Las Dalias Hippy Market

Las Dalias Hippy Market on the grounds of the multi-purpose venue Las Dalias in the village of San Carlos is probably the best-known hippy market on the island due to its very inviting and picturesque atmosphere.

With exotic colours that surround visitors on entrance, it features a 200-stall market where you can find crafts from all over the globe, clothes, unusual musical instruments, hammocks and antiques. You can also pamper yourself with a body massage or have your tarot cards or palm read.

There also are restaurants and food stands, several bars and even an Arabian tea tent with a selection of teas and Moroccan pastries.

When: Every Saturday year round (except January when Las Dalias is closed) from 10:00 to late afternoon / Sundays from October to May (except January) from 11:00 to late afternoon

Las Dalias Night Market offers a more relaxed version of the market on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings during the summer, with live music. On Sundays, there are dance music events on the terrace of the restaurant and later in the in-house club Akasha.

When: every Monday, Tuesday and Sunday from June to September, 18:00 to midnight (in June and September to 23:30)

Mercadillo de Sant Jordi - flea market

San Jordi's flea market is an authentic car boot sale and a favourite with locals, getting most crowded during the winter.

It is held at the hippodrome on the outskirts of the village of Sant Jordi and anyone can sell without the need for a permit. Therefore, it is possible to find virtually everything (seriously, everything) for very reasonable prices. It is quite big, so make sure time is on your side - you will most definitely be tempted to see it all.

From midday, drummers often add to the atmosphere. There is a bar for drinks and snacks - if you want to dine out properly, you will find a great choice of reasonably priced restaurants in the village itself.

When: every Saturday all year round, 8:00 to 15:00

San Juan Artisan Market

Held on the central square and around the church of the charming village of San Juan in the north of the island, this lovely artisan market offers live music (after midday), delicious food, various crafts, items of clothing and locally grown organic fruit and vegetables.

There is an open art gallery, and several local bars and restaurants cater for all gastronomic needs. Boasting a colourful, friendly and buzzing vibe, it's definitely a must if you want to get immersed in the rich local culture.

When: every Sunday all year round, 9:00 to 16:00

Playa d'en Bossa Hippy Market

Situated along pedestrianised streets in the centre of the popular resort of Playa d'en Bossa, this small, daily hippy market is very convenient for holidaymakers staying close to the area or for a short stopover after the beach.

Street pantomimes and musicians are often seen alongside the artisanal products on offer.

When: Every day from May to September, 18:00 to midnight
