What Jo did next... | Work hard, play harder

Dancefloor diaries. 27 June to 3 July.

Lissy, who? Whilst Lissy Lü has back home in the UK meeting her newborn niece, instead of pausing dancefloor diaries, we've decided to keep them going by passing the responsibility to Jo!

We had the pleasure of offering Jo an intern placement in summer 2019, which gave her first experience of working in the music industry.

In the time since, she has gone on to work for a music publicist, feature on podcasts and present on regional radio, but she has always kept Ibiza close to her heart. Five years later, we're delighted to welcome her back to the island and to the club team.

This is the story of What Jo did next...

Work hard, play harder

27 June to 3 July

Thursday

After a day at the laptop, I headed over to Ibiza Town to catch up with Ibiza-based DJ Kryder at The Standard's hotel bar. Too busy chatting all things music, it was 00:30 before I knew it and I had a party bus to catch.

Home to freshen up, then straight back out to Eden - espresso martini needed!

One More Time Ibiza | Eden

My early morning galivant was to catch up with friend and Ibiza DJ legend Vicky Devine who was playing at One More Time Ibiza's closing party, which coincided with her birthday celebrations.

Friday

On Friday, another birthday was in order with Beachouse Ibiza celebrating its tenth anniversary. Tim, Kt and I put on our best boho garms and headed for Playa d'en Bossa.

What Jo did next...

Drinks and tasty entrees worked the terrace, where former F1 racing driver Nico Rosberg happened to be amongst those mingling. The freeing atmosphere felt miles away from the hustle and bustle that usually associated with hedonistic clubber's paradise Bossa.

On the beach, a crowd gathered in front of the mirrored art piece where the night’s entertainment would begin. Rhythm lovers PAAX Tulum wowed with a live musical performance and candlelit performers told stories through the means of dance and body movement.

What Jo did next...

As dusk fell the party moved inside to reveal special guest DJ Pablo Fierro behind the decks who spun a hip-winding Latin House infusion before heading to his Club Chinois residency later that night.

Saturday

The clubbing team headed straight to Ibiza Rocks for UK party LoveJuice where the vibes, confetti cannons and House selections were equally popping-off. Treated to a stage-side bed we had the best view of warm-up DJs Tilli Murphy and Goody, soon to be followed by resident Sammy Porter.

What Jo did next...

A quick detour to O Beach for Soul Heaven to soak up the final sun rays then we met up with Holly (another former Ibiza Spotlight intern) and her friend Mahtab at Natural Pau to catch-up over dinner.

Now this was a biggie. Charlotte and I completed the day’s party hat-trick at Pacha for Flower Power where the one and only Grace Jones stunned with a live performance of a lifetime. I finally got to see her famous hula-hooping rendition of Slave To The Rhythm. Bucket list ticked!

I could go on but you'll have to check-out my review of a night with Grace Jones to find out more.

Monday

After parking up with my laptop at sunset spot Kumharas for an evening of writing and I get the text from Steve to say we've double-whammy club duties in Playa d'en Bossa. You know it's peak season on Ibiza when one party at a time just isn't enough!

Kumharas

I grabbed a slice of pizza and we wandered down to All Day I Dream at Playa Soleil. I've not set foot on the dancefloor since my last encounter with its famous predecessor Bora Bora back in 2022, and oh my, what a glow-up!

Feeling like we’d been transported to the depths of a rave cave, we got down to label boss Lee Burridge's ethereal grooves before crossing the road to Hï Ibiza for Eric Prydz presents [CELL] – quite the switch-up, right?

What Jo did next...

The Theatre transformed into a hallucinogenic matrix of LED lights in art form and Prydz slammed down his epic catalogue, closing out on the immortal progression of Opus.

Wednesday

Time for our weekly meet at co-working space theHUB to discuss the latest going-ons in Ibiza clubland. Strictly confidential, of course. Sssh!

Once there, photography whizz Charlotte updated my Spotlight head shots - and you can see the results above. If Steve threatens me one more time with that 2019 intern photo, I will riot.

What Jo did next...

Later, myself and the club team's newest recruit Luke journeyed to Cova Santa for SG Lewis' label takeover Forever Days – last week's party radar pick for those with a keen eye. Luke had never been to Cova Santa before, so I looked forward to showing him around the hillside hippy hangout.

SG Lewis and Bonobo soundtracked sunset before a world-first combo of SG Lewis b2b Bonobo b2b Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. It was as big as it sounds.

Catching Logic1000 in the club room then back home for a reasonable time (for Ibiza anyway) and ready to get back to the grind in the morning.

Skinny Kitchen

Restaurant of the week

Work hard, play hard doesn’t often allow for a lot of rest and rejuvenation, nor does a party holiday on Ibiza. To refuel and nourish your body, Skinny Kitchen hits the spot every time.

Located in the bustling San Antonio harbour, it’s in walking distance for most staying in town which is great if you’re feeling less than fresh. The tasty brunch menu is where you’ll find my favourite smashed avocado on sourdough with beetroot hummus, poached eggs and pomegranate.

I'm basic, I know, but seriously yum! You can also choose from burgers, flat breads, sharing platters and replenishing smoothies. And if you fancy a hair of the dog? The Skinny Kitchen cocktail menu has you covered.

Boiler Room | Charli XCX presents PARTY GIRL Ibiza | Amnesia | Friday 12 July

Underground institution Boiler Room sets-up in Amnesia for a one-off takeover hosted by Charli XCX presents PARTYGIRL Ibiza.

The international club-pop star is set to spin solo and go back-to-back with Tove Lo under their Ladies Of Leisure outfit. The girl gang doesn’t stop there. The XX's Romy, Shygirl and Kelly Lee Owens each take their turn to shake-up the Terraza.

Meanwhile, the Club Room beats to the sound of Kettama, Call Super and Taylah Elaine. It’s been two years since Boiler Room has hit-up Ibiza, and if Charli XCX's viral NYC set back in February is anything to by, then this is sure to be one hell of a party.

Line-up: Ladies Of Leisure (Charli XCX & Tove Lo), Romy (DJ set), Shygirl, Kelly Lee Owens, Kettama, Call Super and Taylah Elaine

Whisper from the dancefloor

Talking of Boiler Room, word on the island is that there's a surprise special guest flying in for an appearance on Friday night. Any guesses who will complete the all-star female line-up? It could be a biggie.

Tune of the week

Big Miz | New World Order | Livery Street Social Club | 28 June

Glasgow party starter Big Miz swoops in with this naughty House fix, injected with obscure vocal cuts over a grooving bass and made with the club in mind.

Landing on Liam Doc’s Livery Street Social Club record label the release is forms part of artist compilation This Ain’t Leaving Your Cade Vol.1 alongside Luca Elliott, Yesca and Doc himself which is definitely worth a spin.

I can picture New World Order going off on Amnesia's Terraza. Miz, I’m manifesting it for you now.

Hungry for more dancefloor diaries? After her fortnight hiatus, Lissy Lü is back on the island and will return to dancefloor diaries duties next week. Here's what she got up to.
