Just three years after it was inaugurated, Jazz Point Ibiza has now established itself as the island’s leading international jazz festival thanks to the sheer number and quality of the world-famous performers who flock to perform at it. This year’s festival – which takes place with the full support of the Island Council of Tourism and Culture and local town councils - will run from 13 through 16 October. It will culminate in the Closing Party at WOM Radio Cafe in Santa Eulalia, where attendees can look forward to “The Giants of Jazz Jam Session”. Combined with a series of “Master Classes” for local musicians, it promises to be an absolutely unmissable event for aficionados and newcomers alike.
Much of its remarkable success is down to the close relationship between the organisers, David Moss and Adam Lenox of the Ibiza Music Agency, and their US partners, the New York-based booking agency of J. Chriss & Company, and the renowned entertainment industry entrepreneur Paxton Baker.
Thanks to the decades of experience accrued by these American partners and the close relationship they have built up with the performers, Jazz Point Ibiza Festival is able to attract some of the biggest names on the international jazz scene, playing alongside some truly special guest stars. For example, the guest artist who will be accompanying local Ibiza legend Muriel Grossmann, the Polish harpist Alina Bzhezhinska, is featured on the cover of Jazzwise magazine’s October edition.
Besides these not-to-be-missed shows – taking place at venues around the island - two of the star performers, Dr David Schroeder, head of the Department of Jazz at NYU, and Antonio Figura, will be giving “Master Classes” for local musicians at Can Ventosa in Ibiza Town on 15 October. In these open sessions, the musical masters will be sharing their wealth of knowledge about jazz (all instruments welcome!) and the art of performing at the highest level with anyone who wishes to attend (reservations only).
Set in the world’s electronic music capital, Jazz Point Ibiza Festival is a wonderful event that has great appeal not only to seasoned jazz enthusiasts but also members of the general public who appreciate the passion, inspiration and unbridled enthusiasm of the fabulous musicians who take part. Its slogan “Bringing international giants of jazz to Ibiza” really does sum it up, so make a date in your diary and prepare to be wowed by the sublime sounds of some of the planet’s leading jazz musicians.
