For those seeking to discover the island at its most authentic, March is one of the best times of the year. As the days grow longer and temperatures begin to rise, it's a great time to get out and enjoy the island, in particular, its beaches and hiking trails. With the island's residents beginning to emerge after the winter months, it's good for socialising and having a drink on the terrace of a bar in the spring sun.
Nonetheless, the weather is still very changeable, so if you are coming in March, remember to pack for all kinds of weather, especially the occasional shower. At night, temperatures drop considerably, so bring suitable clothes. The high humidity on the island means it can feel extra chilly.
Events
In March, Pintxa San Antonio hits the town. It's an annual competition between the local bars that offer a "pintxo" (a mini appetiser pierced with a cocktail stick and often served on bread) plus a soft drink, beer or wine. It's a great opportunity to enjoy mini tapas or pinchos plus a drink for a very reasonable price. The locals bar hop in large groups from place to place, enjoying the palpably energetic atmosphere. Some venues also offer live music. In the restaurants and bars, you'll find flyers for the participating eateries. There's a free mini-train usually connecting many of the bars, especially those further afield.
The small village of San José celebrates its fiesta with that perennial favourite: Flower Power. Celebrations surround 19 March, the day of Saint Joseph. On one of the Saturday nights before or after that date, the church square turns into an open-air disco with DJs and live bands playing all night long. Free buses are usually put on to transport people from the major towns.
