Ibiza Preservation reveals plans to protect our lizards

IbizaPreservation is launching a new crowdfunding campaign to save the islands' beloved local lizard population with 200 specially designed shelters.

Under the aegis of its “Giving Tuesday” campaign, IP seeks to raise €10,000 to install stone shelters for lizards.

“Giving Tuesday” is a global philanthropic movement conceived as an antidote to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two hyper-consumerist events held in November every year.

As part of “Giving Tuesday,” IbizaPreservation is joining forces with two leading local NGOs devoted to preserving the islands’ biodiversity. This year, the focus is on protecting the highly endangered Pitiusan lizard, Podarcis pityusensis, which is threatened by the proliferation of snakes on the islands.

The director of IbizaPreservation, Inma Saranova, states, “We are aware of the grave situation facing the islands’ emblematic lizard population. For this reason, we aim to raise €10,000 to make and install around 200 stone refuges in the private gardens of hotels and pedestrian zones across the island.”

The stone refuges feature tiny entrances through which lizards can enter, but not snakes. Inside, they are filled with pine cuttings, creating a safe abode in which lizards can make their home and reproduce. Alongside the shelters will be snake traps.

IbizaPreservation counts on donations from all sectors of Ibiza and Formentera’s population in reaching the goal. Those wishing to donate can do so via the website migranodearena.org and click the button “Dona
