Cala Nova beach

Natural and unspoilt, with the right wind, Cala Nova is one of Ibiza's top surf spots.

Location: At the north end of the resort Es Caná
Facilities: Loungers, parasols, showers (turned off to save water), restaurants and bars, lifeguards, access for the disabled
Size: 250 metres long, 20 metres wide
Getting there: Reached by foot or bicycle from Es Caná a few hundred metres away. You can also walk along the coast, partly there is a promenade, but at the end you have to climb over some rocky parts. If you come by car via Es Caná, free parking possibilities are very limited, best to park in the resort itself already and walk. There is one large paid parking near the beach, but it is quite expensive. Alternatively, drive to the north end of the beach via San Carlos and then Cala Leña (there's beautiful sightseeing along this drive). Parking is available in the woods at the end of the dirt track that leads to the beach.

The beach

At the north end of the popular resort of Es Caná you'll find Cala Nova, a wide, long curve of sandy beach. Its shallow waters extend quite a way into the sea.

The water in Cala Nova is especially clear and transparent and shimmers in different shades of blue and turquoise. There are quite a few fish to be seen. The rocky coast to the left is very nice for snorkelling.

With the right wind, Cala Nova is one of Ibiza's few beaches with decent surf and is, therefore, very popular with the island's few dedicated surfers. Owing to the strong currents and waves, you should be careful when swimming or letting young ones swim in Cala Nova: there are no buoys to mark off the safe swimming zone on this beach.

The surrounding scenery is wild and natural, with a little hill covered in pine trees to the left for energetic walks.

Cala Nova is very popular with the locals, especially on the weekends, which gives it a special flair. Families and large groups of the new Ibiza hippie generation enjoy their days off here, so you can hear a variety of languages spoken.

Spotlight tip

You can walk around the headland to the left to bring you to Cala Leña beach.

Beach bars and restaurants

Lining the beach you will find beautiful beach clubs and traditional restaurants, offering tasty food in a relaxed atmosphere, and with amazing views of the sparkling waves.

At the north end there is a small rustic beach hut, which is known for fresh fish - though not cheap, it is very atmospheric; you can eat with your toes in the sand or at tables under the shade of pines.

At the south end there are some nice restaurants hidden in the dunes behind the beach, which offer a nice alternative, though without sea views.
