The running version of Rugby Union arrives in Ibiza next June when an 8 team tournament of Tens rugby takes place at the Can Misses stadium on the outskirts of Ibiza town.
The competition is the idea of Abby Edwards, a London businesswoman who likes both Rugby and Ibiza. Backed by Island and City local government, it's the first Tens tourney ever held in Ibiza and the aim is to promote the game on the island and throughout Spain.
A crowd of 5,000 is hoped for on the big day – June 8th 2013 – when the teams , including one from Ibiza Rugby Club and one made up of former Internationals will play a total of 16 matches of 10 minutes each way during the day to decide the winner. There will also be a number of English Premiership players on hand to offer advice to the teams and mingle with the crowd.
Tens itself is a full contact version of Rugby Union played with 5 backs and 5 forwards, so there are scrums and rucks, but because the field isn't congested by wing forwards spoiling everything there is actually some running with the ball which could lead to a try being scored.
Unlike when England play the 15 man game, Tens is a fast and exciting contact sport enjoyed by both players and spectators alike, and is often used as pre-season training practice by teams.
So, if you fancy a fun filled sun filled day of running, rucking and mauling then check out the official website of the competition – RugbySpy – which has all the details.
