Let's hear it for Ibiza’s intrepid eco-farmers! Coinciding with World Environmental Health Day, the Sustainability Observatory of leading local ecological NGO, IbizaPreservation, has recently released figures showing that the organic Utilised Agricultural Area (UAA) expanded from 792 hectares in 2020 to 1,385 hectares in 2023.
All five of Ibiza’s municipalities saw increases in registered organic farmland between 2022 and 2023, with San Antonio leading the way with a 22.8% rise (56 hectares), followed by Sant Josep with 9.6% (42 hectares), and smaller increases in Santa Eulalia and San Juan.

This growth is in line with the European Union’s “Farm to Fork” strategy, which aims for 25% of agricultural land to be organic by 2030. Ibiza is currently at 18%, slightly below the overall Balearic average of 20%.
Elisa Langley, coordinator of the Sustainability Observatory, emphasised the importance of continuing to expand organic farming. “Organic farming not only benefits the local community by providing chemical-free products but also supports environmental health by reducing our carbon footprint and protecting wildlife,” she stated.

The Observatory report also highlighted a significant increase in organic poultry farming, which tripled in 2023.
