Ibiza Beach of the Week: Portinatx

The popular family resort of Portinatx offers visitors no less than three gorgeous beaches!.

Located in the far north of Ibiza, the secluded resort of Portinatx is home to three beaches. Each beach is quite distinct: the longest is S'Arenal Gros followed by the more private S'Arenal Petit and then Playa Porto, which is surrounded by pine-covered hills.

Highly popular with families - the child-friendly waters and a bathing zone marked with buoys are two key reasons - Portinatx is an oasis of tranquillity thanks to its natural surroundings, sparklingly turquoise waters and picture-postcard prettiness.

Its crystal-clear waters are ideal for snorkelling and the seabed consists of fine white sand. It’s well catered for with aquatic activities such as a diving school, pedalos, water skis, jet skis, SUP and kayak rental.

Alternatively, take a wander around the bay to delight in the scenery and take some photos, or go by the coastal route along the rugged northeastern coastline, passing the 52-metre high Punta Moscarter, the tallest lighthouse in the Balearic Islands en route. Taking around three hours, the picturesque walk is best navigated by using Google Maps or a hiking app. In addition, bear in mind that this is quite a challenging trail, so wear suitable footwear and a hat/sun protection and carry enough water with you.

Located in the centre of the resort, S'Arenal Gros is the largest of the beaches in Portinatx, measuring some 170 metres long and anywhere between 15-80 metres wide. It has many facilities including a lifeguard, a car park, shops, a supermarket, restaurants, bars, public toilets, an ATM and access for the physically impaired.

At 60 metres long and between 5-75 metres wide, S'Arenal Petit is the second-largest beach in Portinatx. A paved promenade along the rocky promontory connects it with S’Arenal Gros. Facilities include sunbeds, parasols, restaurants, bars, a promenade, shops, and an ATM.  Specialising in traditional cuisine from the northwestern region of Asturias, fused with international influences, La Boca Junta is a recommended restaurant overlooking this beach. Activities range from pedalos and SUP (stand-up paddle) to kayak rental.

To the rear of the beach, there is a volleyball net and lots of shaded space to chill out. There is a large car park at the entrance to the beach, with charging stations for electric vehicles.

The third beach is Playa Porto, set in a tiny cove at the end of the main road. It measures some 40 metres long and 35 metres wide. Like the others, it features lovely, transparent waters. It’s a 10-minute walk from S'Arenal Gros and the centre of the resort. This is the quietest beach of the three.

The sand is not as fine here as at the other two beaches, as it is interspersed with small pebbles. The narrow bay stretches far inland and is protected by offshore islands, so the water is very calm.

Facilities include sun loungers, parasols, showers, restaurants, and sun lounger service, while marine activities go from a diving school to boat hire. Parking is available on the sandy ground around the bay.

Buses connect regularly with Portinatx from Ibiza Town - route 20A - and Santa Eulalia - route 21. Small ferries also go to and from San Antonio; the jetty is located on the rocky promontory between the beaches of S'Arenal Gros and S'Arenal Petit.
