Ibiza Beach of the Week: Benirrás

Famous for its spectacular sunsets and legendary drumming sessions, Benirrás is one of the northwest's finest beaches.

Located on the north-west coast of Ibiza, just a ten-minute drive from San Miguel, Benirras is one of Ibiza's most famous beaches.

Sheltered by a backdrop of pine-forested cliffs, Benirrás is a mixture of pebbles and sand, with rocks at each end of the beach. The water here is marvellously clear, making it an ideal place for snorkelling, and a popular anchoring spot for private yachts and motor boats.

Sun-loungers and parasols are available to rent, and there are showers and a beach boutique. The presence of lifeguards means it is a safe environment for children. In summer a small hippy market is open every day apart from Wednesdays and Thursdays, from late morning till evening. The stands sell fashion, accessories, handicrafts, and more. There are three restaurants serving excellent, reasonably-priced food, and a small beach bar.

The 27-metre tall rock formation about 600m out from the middle of the cove is known as Cap Bernat. Some people say it resembles a praying woman; others say it resembles the Sphinx. Either way, it is this that makes the sunsets at Benirrás Beach so extraordinary, with the sun burning bright orange behind it as it sinks into the sea.

The famous drumming sessions that once took place on Sunday evenings, attracting thousands of people, have now been replaced by smaller, more low-key ones held every day at sunset. If you want to experience something of Ibiza's hippie past, don't miss this happening.

Benirrás beach can be reached by car and public transport. If you take the bus - a good idea given how busy it gets in peak season - there are four routes:

  • L23 Ibiza Town - Benirrás
  • L23A San Antonio - Benirrás
  • L23B Santa Eulalia - Benirrás
  • L23C Portinatx - Benirrás

All go via the bus stop known as Sa Plana, where there is a large parking space. The popular supermarket here is closed on Sundays.

At the beach, there are two car parks with a capacity of 400 cars.

Tip: Get there early in the morning if you want to assure yourself of a parking spot, or, better still, make use of the bus service.

Litter disposal: Please make use of the coloured recycling bins (see this article if new to you) when disposing of your litter and - if you smoke - make sure to take your used cigarette butts with you. See our article on Responsible Smoking on Ibiza's Beaches here

So, if you want a great day at the beach, with beautiful natural surroundings and an authentic hippy atmosphere, Benirrás beach is the place for you!
