IMS Interview: Pete Tong

As the countdown to IMS 2010 continues, founding father Pete Tong briefly gave us his thoughts on this year's conference and Grand Finale event.

Spotlight: Explain what a big deal holding the event in this particular location is?

Tongy: It was important for us that we came up with a unique proposition to celebrate the IMS. There is no doubt that the DALT VILA location is totally iconic. Its the postcard shot of Ibiza and it's never been used for an electronic event. The location inspires and excites both the performer and the audience.

How did the selection process to choose the artists develop. It's quite a diverse selection?

The partners discuss what direction we want to go in and then we look at what's possible within the confines of the stage at Dalt Vila and the cost. Last year was all about Basement Jaxx. A big band performing in this amazing location. This year we have gone a little bit more experimental with some special dj sets and live performances from an exciting new act David E Sugar and a sensational band from Portugal who have been building a big following over the last few years Buraka Som Sistema. That's the spirit of the IMS. New music new ideas and putting something on that could grow from the event.

What are the aims for where IMS is going? Will it develop so there are more and more events like ADE or similar?

SONAR in Barcelona was a big inspiration for us. Also the old NEW MUSIC SEMINAR in New York in the 80's. We hope we can continue to develop in that spirit but we will really need further support from the Ibiza Consell to get to that level.

Finally, what's the score with having Bryan Ferry for Wonderland Opening and what else have you got planned for Fridays at Eden?

We always try to raise the eyebrows and surprise people. Bryan Ferry (right) and Roxy Music were a huge influence on me when I was growing up. I still don't think there has ever been a group like it and they still have a huge influence today. Bryan has been a regular face on the island for years and takes an active interest in the clubs and the music. When he decided to work with Groove Armada and DJ Hell I asked him if he would be up for the opening party and he said yes... It will be a historic moment!! We have put together an exciting and eclectic line up this summer featuring established and new artists that Im championing. Eden has also undergone a refit with a whole new VIP area, lighting & visuals. It's going to be a great season.
