Top releases: July 2016

Big tracks from July that are begging for a rinsing.

Doctr 'Tropique' / Music For Dreams / 15 July

Straight in there with a track that's the epitome of summer vibes is Dutch DJ, Doctr. From the mere title of the track you're gunning for something a little fruity and this has the brightly coloured fleshy stuff written all over it. Stick 'upbeat' in the thesaurus and you've got yourself an army of words that this track radiates.

Forever 'Course' (Mr G Gestures remix) / Grade 10 International / 15 July

Enigmatic god is one way Mr. G, aka Colin McBean, has been described, and he's one of the few who's truly deserving of the 'legend' descriptor. The latest venture from McBean (what an excellent surname) sees him on remix duties for Forever's debut track on recently launched imprint, Grade 10 International. He captures the vibe with zigzagging and quivering riffs that's offset with his signature kick.

Dubfire & Oliver Huntemann 'Fuego' (Julian Jeweil remix) / Senso Sounds / 1 July

When the forces of Dubfire and Oliver Huntemann were brought together for their Elements project, the pairing was described as a “true techno dream team.” A few years on and they're back with a package of killer remixes from two artists who've had their fair share of being members of techno dream teams. French bait, Julien Jeweil, takes on 'Fuego' and gives it a dusting of the supreme stuff. As the Spanish word for fire, 'Fuego' is one that blazes through whatever listening device you so choose to blast it. Gritty and gnarly with plenty of throbbing muscle.

Denis Sulta ´'Dubelle Oh Xx' (Jackmaster VIP) / K7 Records / 8 July

A total menace behind the decks, Sulta has been propelled through the ranks to be heralded as one of Glasgow's brightest rising producers. His cuts of prime produce featured twice on Jackmaster's DJ Kicks installation, and as this is the only one we could get our hands on, it made selecting between the two much easier. Utterly brilliant and sheer skull-in-the-clouds euphoria by the way of the soaring synths that take you to that G-spot place.

Marc Houle 'I Don´t Want To Watch You Read' / Innervisions / 29 July

Maybe Marc Houle hasn't found the right specimen to creep on while leafing through a novel, or he knows through experience that he'd much rather go for a walk, among other activities strictly for the lovers. The release comes from a four-tracker EP - his debut on Dixon and Âme's Innervisions imprint. The vocals act as a request of what he'd like to do with a lover and seeing as he has a penchant for the sonically twisted, you'd rightfully go in expecting the provocative.

Sven Väth 'Electric Salsa' (Henrik Schwarz dub) / Cocoon Recordings / 25 July

If any of you lucky disco ducks are here for the whole season and hold Cocoon dear to your throbbing hearts, then chances are you've had your fair share of giving this one your undivided attention at Amnesia. Papa Sven recorded that game-changing original back when he was 21 with OFF and this year it hit its 30th anniversary. It's been aired in his sets over the years, but to celebrate the milestone, we've been blessed with a remix package. Henrik Schwarz's 'Dub' rework has been firmly stamped with dance floor approval by the main man himself – job done. If Väth is due a visit to your corner of the globe, expect a showdown of this monster.

Massive Attack 'Spoils' / Virgin Records / 29 July

At the end of last week, English trip-hop stalwarts, Massive Attack, put out two new tracks on their Fantom app which follows their Ritual Spirit EP from January and both are coated in brilliance. The lead singer of Mazzy Star - Hope Sandoval - featured on 'Paradise Circus' and on 'Spoils', and here she lends her uniquely expressive, hair-raising vocals to Massive Attacks once more. Orchestral opulence.

Justice 'Safe and Sound' / Because Music / 13 July

It's a big welcome back to the French electro magnets who became all our pals when they crashed into the scene nearly a decade ago with 'We Are Your Friends'. The duo's latest release breaks a five year silence and we're hoping this is a statement that cries “WE´RE BACK ON FORM.” Bass-slapping and choir breaks slam all over this shimmering disco bleed that's reminiscent of a not-so-forgotten era when mirrored disco balls dominated.

Harvey McKay 'Dropout' / Intec / 4 July

The wardens of banging Glaswegian techno are back in our selection again with Harvey McKay's return to Carl Cox and Jon Rundell's label, Intec. The title track from his Dropout EP follows on from 'Something Good' and 'Wrong Turn', which both smashed Beatport's Top 10 Techno chart in 2015. It's a fiery fusion of high-tension loop-up drums, vocal bleeds and grinding percussive elements fit for aural pleasure whistles on the dance floor. Tension is built in before you're left hanging dry for another beast to replace the serotonin.

Equiknoxx 'A Rabbit Spoke To Me When I Woke Up' / DDS / 25 July

We'd imagine that waking up to a rabbit loaded with killer banter, while you're still processing reality, would be pretty damn cool, and even if its chat was crap, you'd 100% listen to all of it. The trippy title comes from Jamaican duo, Equiknoxx, who are crunching into their own brand of dancehall rhythms. This track is evidence for why they're lauded for their futuristic and experimental vision with blistering drum beats, otherworldly synths and shrieking bird calls.
