SPTL153: Anthea

Catch the former Phonica Records employee at Used + Abused on September 19th.

The Mix

Talk us through the track selection of the mix.

"It's mainly tracks I play a lot or just love to hear again and again since I got my hands on them, they do something to me! I've also included my own works and edits. It's what I was in the moment."

Where and how was the mix recorded?

"In Berlin with love."

What are the musical influences that have allowed you to arrive at this podcast?

"The vibe from Romania's house scene and jacking house heroes Derrick Carter and Mark Farina. I always loved the way they grooved the music and kept a bounce and energy throughout their sets."

The Plug

What is keeping you busy at the moment?

"Running the label (Brouqade) with Dana and Ann. Thankfully gigs and travelling have also kept me busy all year. I've had some really amazing opportunities in 2013 and it's only getting better."

You're playing for Loco Dice's party a few times this season, right? It is about time Loco Dice had his own party, don't you think?

"Yes I am! I whole heartedly agree. Dice has been a huge inspiration throughout my career, and I'm sure the same could be said for many aspiring DJ's and producers. He's also been a major staple in the Ibiza club scene for years, so it's great that he's finally able to provide a consistent platform for educating the Ibiza veterans and newcomers alike."

Where else might we catch you over the course of the season?

"Panorama Bar and Club De Visionaire in Berlin, Air Tokyo, tINI & the gang, Space, Underground Ibiza and Fabric."

You forget sometimes that DJs who are now doing well once just had normal jobs and normal lives. Yours started in a way by working in record stores, such as Phonica and Flying Records in London. How important a place is a record store for educating you when at the very beginning of your career?

"I think it's extremely important. For most DJ's collecting music is a major part of growing as an artist and developing a unique character and sound. And as you can imagine, working in a record store certainly places you at the forefront of it all. I'm very grateful for the opportunities that my career path has given me and I wouldn't have it any other way."

Finally, you have a weekend off. What do you do? Where do you go? As you're Berlin based, I image something around there?

"Depends how much energy I have! I'll either chill at home - I like being at home as I'm hardly ever there, or I like to catch up with friends."

"But generally, on my days off you will find me at my studio in Berlin."

Biography

In the light of the term ‘underground' ubiquitously flying across the dance universe these days, luckily there are artists that still capture the very essence of the notion in their dogged pursuit of quality and individuality before conformity, whilst simultaneously paying homage to past times. Take a bow, Anthea.

Once a fixture of London's Flying Records and Phonica Records, where she also did the bookings for their monthly parties at the infamous, sadly defunct T-Bar, the now Berlin based artist has been acquiring her cutting edge tastemaker ears for the better part of 15 years, as an integrated cog in the wheel of London's electronic music scene.

Honing a sound that meanders between funk-fuelled house and techno, with a flair for intrinsically deep and boisterous basslines where the groove is key, she deftly showcases an understanding of vintage building blocks, and continues to entertain crowds at Fabric in London, Watergate in Berlin, Harry Klein in Munich, Underground in Ibiza, and Gipsy in Moscow to name a select few.

On the production side of things, it is evident that Anthea allows for the heartbeat of her new hometown to permeate her productions. She currently counts releases on labels including Freak ‘n Chic, Phonica, All Inn, One Records, Desolat, air london and Brouqade to her name, along with working with the likes of Alex Celler, Guti, Fosky, Alex Picone, Fernando Costantini & Lumieux, not to mention Werner Niedermeier with whom she formed JC Freaks, along with fellow Berliner and label-partner in crime, Dana Ruh.

As One third behind the young and uprising Brouqade Records, alongside Dana Ruh and Ann M Cazal, with a finger on the pulse Anthea's inherently sharp A&R talent has resulted in a string of fresh and exciting new talent seeing the light of day, bringing to the fore the artists of tomorrow, with label showcases high in demand.

Currently busy planning not only her label's showcases – which promises a couple of high-profile appearances in the near future – further Anthea releases on Low Pitch, Oasi Lab and of course Brouqade are all in in the pipeline.
