One of the finest things about Ibiza is the quality of the fresh food that can be bought in the markets of the island. You really can taste the sunshine in the locally produced fruit and vegetables sold on market stalls and roadside shacks all around the island. Add to this fresh Mediterranean fish and seafood, beef from Asturias, lamb from Ibiza and pork fed on acorns from Extremadura, all under the same roof and you're in gourmet heaven.
The 'new market' in Ibiza town has everything you could wish for; fish, meat, fruit, veg, herbs, spices, cheese, cured hams, sausages, teas, flowers, cakes, pastries, bars, cafes, and atmosphere by the bucketload. It's worth a visit just to get a taste of how much fun shopping can be, even if you only buy a couple of things.
The market traders have just put the wheels in motion of a campaign to bring in more shoppers, by attracting new clients and keep them coming back with a loyalty card scheme. They'll be producing flyers with their own specially designed market logo on them (and hopefully a map) as well as reusable shopping bags bearing it.
Hopefully, by pointing people in the right direction – the market is a little bit off the beaten tourist track – the campaign will encourage many more tourists to visit and sample the fine produce which can be bought here.
