A Taste of… Sonrojo

How to do lunch in style on Cala Llonga's beachfront

The lucky holidaymakers who choose Cala Llonga resort as their Ibiza destination have never had more choice of dining options. This charming cove has gone rocketing upmarket over recent years, and the number and quality of restaurants has grown at the same time.

One new arrival in town is Sonrojo, tucked away in a quiet corner close to the ferry dock. Stylishly refurbished, with a cool and shady terrace overlooking the beach, this informal but classy restaurant serves a selection from the greatest hits of Spanish/Mediterranean cuisine. Naturally, there is seafood galore, a great selection of paellas and plenty of choice of meat for the Josper grill.

As the name suggests, Sonrojo is an ideal refuge for those a little frazzled by the daytime sunshine and in search of shade, food and refreshment. We stopped off recently after a morning at the beach to check out the fare on offer and were pleasantly surprised by what we discovered.

Lubricated by some very light and summery cocktails, cold beers and wine, we had what can only be described as a relaxing afternoon ‘refuelling’ before absorbing the final rays of the afternoon sunshine. Here is a little snapshot of what we enjoyed for lunch.

We dived immediately into the cocktail list and came up with a pair of delicious aperitifs to quench our powerful thirsts. A floral and delicate elderflower and melon daiquiri and a fizzy Martini, Verdejo, soda and cava mix hit the spot.

Tortilla de Betanzos topped with salmorejo sauce and Serrano ham. The creamy and liquid interior of the Spanish omelette is a speciality of the house.

Fried squid with a spicy dipping sauce.

Red tuna carpaccio and fried egg topped with almonds and sobrasada, a delicious local Ibizan delicacy from the charcuterie.

Al dente black rice with cuttlefish and juicy prawns.

From the grill, a delicious octopus tentacle on a bed of smoky paprika mashed potatoes.

A tasty trio of sweets. Sheep’s cheesecake, pannacotta with mango gel and a selection of summer fruits with a passion fruit sorbet.

Sonrojo brings new life to the landscape of Cala Llonga. Not only does it hit the right notes of laid-back beachside chilling, it also gets the gastronomy right too. We had a fine afternoon relaxing before heading back out, blinking into the sunlight. If you would like to follow in our footsteps, follow this link.
