Chilling by the Pool: Ocean Drive Talamanca

The best spots on Ibiza to sip cocktails and build your tan.

On this occasion, the Chilling By The Pool series took us to the rooftop terrace of the OD Sky Bar at the swanky Ocean Drive Talamanca, just outside Ibiza Town. The valet parking service on arrival at the hotel and the greeting by the friendly, knowledgeable staff at reception ensured we immediately felt at home.

Once we’d settled on our poolside sun lounger, we took in the surroundings. The first thing that grabbed our attention was the truly spectacular views the Sky Bar has of the sea - with Formentera in the distance, Ibiza Town - in particular - Dalt Vila (its historic quarter), and the green hills that ring the town. The best thing of all about them is that from the rooftop terrace you get clear, uninterrupted vistas. Worth the price of admission alone!

Surrounded by brightly coloured bougainvillaea in violet and red tones, the intimate rooftop terrace was already almost full with sun-worshippers, mostly hotel guests. However, it’s also increasingly popular with local residents in the area who, our waiter told us, appreciate the chance to spend the day relaxing there. Armed with reading matter and sun cream, we were all ready for some pampering, OD style.

The water in the shallow, lime-coloured pool was bracing; perfect to cool off as the midday sun baked the terrace.

Other guests around us were soaking up the sun, sipping on cocktails (more about them further on) and chatting together. There was a lovely breeze coming off the bay. Our super-attentive waiter, Alejandro, took our orders: a pina colada mocktail and the signature cocktail, OD Coco Thai with kaffir lime, coconut milk and ginger: nice and refreshing!

The soft Balearic beats emanating from the speakers helped us to get into the mood for a blissful afternoon of chilling.

Drinks in hand, we checked out the menu. We opted for croquettes, a crisp Caesar salad, guacamole and one of its signature chicken burgers. They arrived in no time.

For dessert, we had a plate of brownies and a cheesecake on a bed of carob, sourced from the island.

By late afternoon, we were sufficiently sated and suntanned to call it a day, reluctantly rising from our sun bed. We’d love to come in the evening, when it’s open for dinner and drinks, with live music, but that’ll have to wait for another time.

The OD Sky Bar Day Pass comes with a minimum spend of €100 for non-guests and €50 for hotel guests.
