Ibiza companies sign up to be plastic free

Aiming to rid Ibiza of single-use plastics.

A total of 33 Ibiza businesses in the hospitality sector have now signed up for the new campaign, Plastic Free Ibiza.

The new initiative supported by the Ibiza Preservation Foundation, introduces a star-rating system so consumers can clearly see which businesses are taking plastic elimination seriously.

So far hotels such as the ME Ibiza, Wi-Ki Woo, Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza and Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach have signed up, with restaurants like Chiringuito Blue and Nagai also pledging to reduce plastic use.

They are joined by long standing hippy market Las Dalias, which offers a range of eating establishments, as well as eco-boating pioneer La Bella Verde and clubs Heart Ibiza and Ushuaïa.

As part of a larger campaign that covers both Ibiza and Formentera, the ultimate aim is to have the islands plastic free by 2023.

Top beach restaurant Formentera's Chezz Gerdi, where the campaign was first launched, was one of the first to sign up. Manager, Claudio Passiatore commented: "Formentera is an island gem in the Mediterranean. We think it needs to be kept that way, so we are delighted to support this brand new campaign to manage plastic use"

Single-use plastics will be banned in the Balearics from 2021 and include some of the most polluting plastic items like glasses, coffee pods, straws, cutlery and plates.

Interested businesses can gain from between one to three stars dependent on how much plastic they cut out, with each participant gaining a certificate.

For a one star rating, each participating business commits to eliminating three items of single-use plastic in the first year; two stars are awarded when use is reduced by 50% and three stars are garnered for a 100% reduction.

Support is offered by the campaign to any hospitality business wishing to take part, with help to overcome any challenges and in finding good plastic alternatives.
