Spotify Playlist | Sound of the summer

Clubbing intern Kane digs through the archives to find over two decades of iconic summer tracks.

As part of a new music series on Ibiza Spotlight, our staff will be selecting their favourite tunes and curating playlists on our Spotify platform. This week, it's the turn of clubbing intern Kane Allen. Enjoy!

The sound of the summer is different for everyone. This year, for me, it has to be Krystal Klear's Neutron Dance. Not many tracks have the versatility like this one.

I've heard Sven give it a spin at Cocoon on separate occasions; I've heard it send the ANTS colony at Ushuaia into a meltdown; I've heard it on the rocks by Café Mambo for Radio 1 Weekend; and I've even heard it in my favourite local sports bar Ohio just down the road in San Antonio.

For me, that's what the sound of the summer is all about. There's no escaping it: and there's no reason to.

It was interesting to go through the 20 years of Ibiza club bangers and pick-out the ones I, along with much more experienced Ibiza veterans, have heard through the years.

It starts with this summer and goes all the way back to 1999 when I was just three-years-old. So, of course, I've had to research and rely on other people's opinions, what the internet says (insert worried face emoticon) and what Ibiza music media has published in the archives.

My first recalled visit to the island was in 2008, for a family trip to Es Canar. The next one in memory was to clubbing mecca Playa d'en Bossa, where I shared my first pint with my Dad in 2011 in Murphy's (I hope my mum's not reading this). I then came to the island many years after, so I have a reasonable grasp from 2014 onwards.

As much as I'd have liked to, I don't think I was stood on the Space Terrace watching Groove Armada spin some killer tracks and damage my 13-year-old ears.

So, I hope my Spotify playlist brings back some memories. Here's to the next 20 years. Listen to all the sounds below and head here to subscribe.
