Roll up for the San Mateo wine festival 2017

20 small producers offer you samples of their wine in this free event.

Tomorrow 9 December brings local wine in abundance with the 27th San Mateo Wine Festival, or Festa del Vi Pagès.

20 small wine producers from the neighbours' association of San Mateo will be offering up their wares from 17:00.

The wine, offered completely free of charge which you should wash down with the reasonably-priced delicious local sausages sobrasada and butifarra served with local bread.

Expect to see a sea of locals at the festival, which will be lively and fun. This is a time to let your hair down and enjoy great local products at the end of the year.

Made from the grapes of vines that emanate from the fertile soil of San Mateo, the wine is strong in body and character, which may make you less so if you overindulge, so watch out the drivers amongst you.

The excellent soil conditions mean an abundance of wine and each year this is made use of during the festival, traditionally held on the second Saturday of the last month of the year.

Pagès is literally translated as ‘peasant' and harks back to a simpler time when all Ibizans were less prosperous and very self-sufficient, many growing their produce and making their own wine.

Thankfully, we are living in easier times, though that doesn't mean that the tradition of wine making at home has been lost, with the festival bringing you some of the best of what local wine producers have to offer.

For a chance to revel with the locals and drink the tasty wine of San Mateo, head north this Saturday.
