El Viajo Gallo - one of the top 7 chiringuitos in Spain

2 years ago, national newspaper El Mundo published their list of the top 7 chiringuitos in Spain and we are lucky enough to have one of those right here in San Antonio, Ibiza.

Founded in 1959, El Viejo Gallo, was the 2nd restaurant to open in San Antonio – that's right just two restaurants for the entire town. As you may imagine, it was very popular. Quite surprising really, considering there were no roads and access was by boat or horse and cart only.

One of the best restaurants in San Antonio

A chiringuito is typically a laidback bar/restaurant with a beachside vibe. Back then, you enjoyed beautiful sea views from the restaurant terrace. With the rise of tourism and the building of homes and apartments along the Bay of San Antonio the sea views have disappeared; but the authentic charm, the shady terrace and the amazing food remain – which is why El Viejo Gallo is still today considered one of the best restaurants in San Antonio.

FRESH local FISH

The current owners helped in the kitchen back when the restaurant first opened, and they remain dedicated to offering a truly special dining experience. All fish is caught locally, the meats are specially chosen (amongst others, Wagyu beef and Black Angus Picahña), the delicious paellas are prepared according to the original recipe.

Simpler times

Considering the quality of the food and the wonderful shady setting, we understand how this venue was selected as one of the top 7 chiringuitos in Spain.

Top tip: if you're wondering how to fit this in, why not hire a car and combine lunch at El Viejo Gallo with a trip to Cala Bassa for a swim and later to Cala Conta for the sunset – that sounds like the kind of day holiday dreams are made of!
