Our package tour operators may be predicting the demise of Ibiza in favour of destinations further to the east but here on the island the indications are somewhat different.
Independent travellers are arriving in record numbers on budget airlines, the ferry companies are laying on extra boats to cope with the massive national holiday market, hotels are relying more and more on internet reservations, and all over the island high-class hotels are full of happy, well-heeled holidaymakers.
The association of Rural Hotels reports that its establishments - luxurious, individually styled country houses - are running at 100% occupancy. Clients of the fastest growing sector of the tourist economy are here to seek peace, relaxation and tranquillity, and to enjoy pursuits like sailing, horse-riding, hiking and good food.
Our hotel sector continues to improve as well. This week saw the final demolition of the old Casino building, making way for a new five-star hotel on the site. This, together with the new Parador and another intimate and luxury hotel being built in Dalt Vila will provide exclusive accommodation for discerning travellers in Ibiza town.
There will of course always be room for package tourists here, but the island is changing with the times - new sports marinas and golf courses are planned - to cater for a market willing to pay for good facilities.
