We all know that our island roads are so packed in summer because of the massive influx of tourists that the odd shunt is bound to happen.
Well it's the same in our sea-lanes round the island when the amount of nautical traffic increases dramatically when thousands of pleasure seeking boat people invade.
The number one nautical blackspot is the area known as es Freus, a busy 'crossroads' on the route from Ibiza to Formentera where over 90% of all accidents in our waters happened last year, including that of the large cruise ship Vistamar.
Whilst major incidents like this are extremely rare, it seems that small accidents involving pleasure craft are much more common and made up 58% of the total last year. And it's easy to see why as the sea is full of cruisers, yachts, jetskis, kayaks, windsurfers, pedaloes, nuclear submarines, and bathers.
Spotlight's message to all seafarers is 'let's be careful out there.'
