In days of old the carob tree provided one of the most important crops on the island, as they were used to feed the animals in the winter.
Even now, some of the old traditions of the farming community still survive. This week on the finca of Pep de sa Plana in Buscastell the carobs were harvested in the traditional way by knocking or dragging them off the trees with a long pole with a hook on the end.
This was done by 50 or so volunteers, who all gather to collect the crop, and then enjoy a hearty country dinner, their only recompense, later in the day.
