Having the correct paperwork for everything is so important in Ibiza for it has been revealed that some unscrupulous employers are using the system to their advantage.
Work inspectors have found that some companies, especially in the building trade, are employing third world labourers who are here illegally and have no paperwork. The labourers are promised a certain wage and then the employer pays them much less - with no papers and the threat of expulsion as an illegal immigrant, the employee has little alternative but to accept what he has been given. Furthermore, without a contract and National Insurance number (NIE), the 'employee' is not entitled to any national health treatment or insurance in the event of an accident.
Only people arriving here from European Community and certain South American countries seeking work do not need a work permit, citizens of ALL other countries need this.
EVERYBODY must register for Tax and Insurance, and later, Residency. We recommend the use of a 'gestor' (a type of lawyer, for want of a better word) to help obtain this paperwork.
