Review: Glitterbox at Space, 7th August

Glitterbox continues its house and disco invasion under the alluring disco balled sparkle.

Glitter has been holding its lofty glitzed glow over Space now for eight weeks into Glitterbox's second season, chaperoned by a high-spirited, soul filling soundtrack of pure house and disco. After being the first to have a nosh at its opening, I came back for another dosage in the Terraza under the silver charged globes.

House music is a spiritual thing…a body thing…a soul thing…and these serotonin packed so-called ‘things' find themselves resonating with us most often on account of their full-bodied vocals. Rich emotive, inviting vocals and pulsing studded basslines carried me past the busy Salon through to the Terraza where the legendary David Morales bared the bones of Inner City's Good Life. House music lays down the path toward unabashed, bold self-expression and Space held a nicely tight recruitment of clubbers able to allow just that. Running with the vocal ammo of a house music diva, songwriter and DJ, Ultra Nate took her spot on stage for an exclusive personal appearance on the island. She boldly belted out her powerhouse range which of course included her smashers, Free and Found a Cure and they needed no invitation from the crowd to belt along with her.

Latin infused, drumming house signaled the arrival of Claudio Coccolutto who took his slot for those who were in it to get down for the long haul. Disco seemed to have taken a side-step this week but as Room 5's lyrics to Make Luv ('I like to party, everybody does') swooned through the Salon, you'd be stuck not to agree with the simple message as it appears ‘everybody' is by no means a heavy handed exaggeration. Glitterbox is a well-packaged spherical storm through the celebration of soul-affecting house. Only thing that was missing for me this week, was the troupe of full crotched glammed up male dancers. Luckily the silver wigged femme fatales who charge the podiums are just as pleasing on the eyes.
