Making the decision to work abroad whether for a season, a year or as a permanent move is an exciting but also difficult and potentially life changing decision to make.
For many it is a chance to party hard, work (not so hard) and have a once in a life time experience before entering the real world. Whilst for others it is a chance to get one foot in the door of a specific industry or career path that they wish to follow. The majority of Ibiza's summer workers are students or graduates enjoying their time off from studies, so doing a season is not only going to be a fun filled experience but it will also be a great opportunity to meet like minded people and form great new friendships.
There are many jobs to choose from with the most popular job roles being; ticket sellers, club PR's, bar staff, restaurant staff and partaking in a club parade. Although you can apply for such roles in advance most workers arrive in Ibiza during May which leaves ample time to apply for jobs and attend recruitment days.
Companies and clubs such as Eden and Pukka Up advertise their PR/ticket selling vacancies before the summer kicks off which gives you the chance to apply online in advance and possibly secure a job. Pukka Up for example hold interviews around the UK and recruit a large number of PR's before the season begins which is a great chance to put your mind at ease in the run up to jetting off to the White Isle.
Top tips for working in Ibiza:
- Where possible apply for vacancies before arriving on the Island
- Organise accommodation before you arrive on the Island; although you can easily find places to stay once here, it is best to have the security of knowing that where you are living will be safe and affordable in advance
- Apply for an NIE number (tax identification number used in Spain)
- Arrive in time for recruitment days (May-Early June)
- Have the relevant travel/health insurance
- Make an effort with the locals and respect that you are living in their country
- Keep an eye out for notice boards in local pubs and bars detailing jobs and other useful information for workers
- Wear sun cream especially those of you working outside during the day (don't worry you will still get a tan!)
- Be friendly, approachable and willing to try your hand at any of the summer jobs. As long as you are willing to serve drinks to excitable tourists or attempt to sell a die hard trance fan a Circo Loco ticket you will soon fit in
- Organise a phone/sim card; either set up a plan from the UK before you leave or get a Spanish phone and sim card from a Western Union shop or phone store in one of the towns such as San Antonio. Worker deals are sometimes available and are priced at approximately 30 Euro's which includes a phone, sim and a cheaper tariff rate for a pay as you go contract
If you see Ibiza as an opportunity to get some valuable work experience in the tourism, music or another industry then look into internships (or similar); as these are steadily becoming more available for seasonal workers.
