Geddes...Mulletin 'el

We catch up with Geddes as Mulletover approaches its 8th anniversary.

Beginning his career as a London based DJ and one third of Rekleiner, Geddes has now gone on to launch his Murmur and Nofitstate imprints as well as the nofitstate event and hugely popular Miulletover party alongside Rob Star.

Mulletover is soon to celebrate its 8th anniversary and what better way to mark its success than bagging a residency at Sankeys Ibiza. Although only hosting the event four times during the summer on Saturday the 26th May, 23rd June, 22nd September and 29th September, the original warehouse party is a welcomed addition to the party calendar.

Here we find out about the challenges Geddes faced as a DJ, producer, label boss and promotor in his rise to the top. We also delve into the history of Mulletover and get the juice on his personal comeback as an artist and what Ibiza should expect from himself and the party this summer.

You're somewhat of a pioneer in the London music scene, how did it all begin for you?

I was introduced to drum & bass, hardcore and later house music when I was a kid, I became fascinated by dance music, clubs and DJs. From an early age I new what I wanted to do and here I am living the dream

What challenges, if any, did you face when starting up as a DJ?

Wanting to play in all the decent clubs and realising it's a tall order, most promoters wouldn't listen to my demo CDs and I would often dream of myself playing in the clubs I wanted to. I remember scrolling through the pages of Mixmag and DJ Mag and writing down all the club details and would send demos on a monthly basis. Persistence paid off but I soon released my dreams weren't going to happen over night.

What made you decide to move from working as Rekleiner alongside the Audiofly guys to going it alone as a solo artist?

We had a great time working as Rekleiner but when the guys moved to Barcelona our production basically stopped, at the time their career really started to take off and it just wasn't possible. I've always wanted to concentrate on my own material and now for the first time ever I'm doing so. From months of dedication I have some pretty strong tracks in the pipeline I think people are going to surprised.

You've not long made a comeback with your 'Inner City Man EP' after a 3 year break from producing, why now and why these tracks?

Well it's taken me that long to sit down and write some music. Inner City Man was the fruit of my efforts and it was time to put something out. Controversy has been rocking for me with lots of great feedback.

Is there a particular story behind the EP, how were you influenced and where does the sound take us?

There's no real story behind it but of course they are reflective of my DJ sets, being on the dance floor and feeling it is my goal.

You started Mulletover in 2004 with Rob Star, tell us how the idea came about and how you guys met...

We met by coincidence the night before the first Mulletover party, by tradition the venue we were using got shut down and we were left homeless. My partner at the time Jafar knew of a party happening down the road which happened to be organised by Rob Star. Rob fortunately had spare floor going at his place and we were able to save the party, from there we formed a partnership and the rest is history.

Interesting name... where did that come from?

To think about something, to mull it over, to contemplate your options.

You've released the Mulletover album on 7th May on Murmur records called 'The Story So Far 2004-2012' which marks the 8th anniversary of the brand, what can we expect from the album?

I tried my best to record something that reflected the night and some of the music that's played, for those that are interested you wont be disappointed.

Was it a long process deciding which artists would represent the sound of Mulletover?

That process is always the most painful but always made easier with a glass of wine.

Mulletover undeniably pushed the movement of events in London to secret locations, why do you think the secretive factor was and still is so in-sync with the style of music and party that Mulletover represents? What is so special about these secret locations?

In London I don't think we have enough clubs to supply demand so the secret location has served a gap in the market that replaced all the clubs. For Mulletover changing the venues around all the time was the secret to our success and at the time we were one of very few to be doing it. Now it's a trend to put ‘secret location' on your party information.

Your last few events have been held in larger more commercial venues such as Matter and Pulse in London, were you conscious of making the transition from a 'warehouse' party to international event and brand?

Not really things evolve and so have we, to keep things interesting you can't keep doing the same thing.

Mulletover events aren't run as regularly as other parties, why is this?

Less is more and both Rob and I have other interests so running a large monthly party isn't possible, if we were running them monthly Mulletover would exist now.

This year you are taking Mulletover to Hideout festival in Croatia, how are you going to bring the Mulletover experience to a festival crowd?

By playing some exceptional music of course, haha!

Mulletover has bagged itself a little summer residency in Ibiza this season, where you'll be hosting 4 parties at Sankeys, why did you choose Sankeys as a venue?

It lends itself to what we do. We've worked closely with We Love before and those guys were a pleasure to work with but there hasn't been anywhere else on the Island that we've been able to call home and Sankeys is that place.

Tell us a bit about the artists who will be joining you for these events...

For our opening party we have Julio Bashmore, Joy Orbison and Huxley with Kubicle feat. Simon Baker in room 2, for June for we have Sebo K, Thugfucker and Bill Patrick, and during September we have Tobi Neuamann, Heidi, Just Jack and Futureboogie.

Can we expect to see you performing anywhere else in Ibiza this summer?

Yes I'm very happy to playing for the guys at We Love, we've know each other for years and last summer they very kindly invited me to play on the terrace which I loved and I'll be doing the same again this year.

Finally, as the top man of Murmur/Nofitstate have you got any exciting signings, events or working progresses that you can tell us about...

Yes. There's music in the pipeline from Myself and Matt Tolfrey, Rhymos, Detroit Swindle, Sonogama who have just released a huge EP ‘My Legs Were Yours' and remixes coming from Frank Roger and Jordon Peak. This year will also be my biggest year for releasing solo material.
