Review: Amnesia Closing

It always promises to be one of the biggest closing parties and runs for a marathon 15 hours at one of Ibiza’s most famous nightclubs. Add a line-up like Dice, Carola and Hawtin and it can only be Amnesia Closing.

It had finally poured with rain after what has been a beautiful September so it was strange to be walking through Amnesia car park jumping over muddy puddles first thing in the morning (the closing party follows on from the final date of Matinee so the best time to arrive is around 8am.)

It was also odd to find the club light inside, sun shining through the glass ceiling, revealing a few already partied out faces. Heading upstairs to the VIP to look out over the Terrace, you could see the room was rammed from corner to corner and a happy atmosphere radiated from the clubbers.

Loco Dice was on the Terrace creating a real upbeat vibe. There was plenty of bass and build ups with big drops to get the crowd going crazy. Overall this summer he has tended to be somewhat flat and lack his usual spark and energy, but today he had the dancefloor excited and it was one of his best sets of the season.

By midday it was literally raining with sweat inside and now down on the dancefloor, squished amongst the mass of sweaty, damp bodies, the club was by far the most packed I have ever seen it. Toilet and bar trips were off the cards due to the length of time it would take you to get there, plus the fear of never making it back to your spot.

There was suddenly a surge of camera phones in the air as Marco Carola took to the decks, instantly recognisable with his signature rolling style. The hedonistic atmosphere only got better and it was madness in the booth as a Pope‘s hat was being passed around the group and they pretended to sanctify the ravers.

For those still going Richie Hawtin took the final set playing until 5pm. Slowly building up minimal beats with a hypnotic rhythm, he bought a renewed energy to the room. As I left the ice cannons were still blasting and people were swaying from every corner with their hands, fans and even banners in the air.

It's one of those things where you just have to be there to appreciate the sheer scale of the party. Now the season has come to an end, for those of you already planning Ibiza 2012 make sure you pencil Amnesia Closing in.
